Defender Day (February 23rd) was first celebrated in 1919 to mark the date in 1918 when the first mass draft into the Red Army during the Russian Civil War (1917-1922). In 1919 it was decided to combine the anniversary of the publication of the decree on the establishment of the Red Army (18.02.1918). However 18.02.1918 was a Monday and it was decided to move the celebration to the following Saturday (23.02.1919). Since then this celebration has stayed as this date.

It should be noted that this day is celebrated as a public holiday in both Transnistria and Russia but not in Moldova.
