Gibraltar - 10 Shillings 1934 Replica Promotional Note 2018

This is a very unique banknote. In 2018, the Government of Gibraltar issued a 10 shillings replica note with the same design of the 10 shillings note first issued in 1934. The purpose of this issue was to celebrate World Tourism in 2018 in Gibraltar. The design of this note is based on the one that was issued with the date of 01.06.1942 (P14b) with the signature of the Financial Secretary CD Todd. On the back, it added the following texts to the note:

CELEBRATE WORLD TOURISM IN 2018

THIS BANKNOTE CAN BE REDEEMED IN GIBRALTAR IN THE YEAR 2018 FOR 50 PENCE

Whilst this is a replica banknote, it was issued as legal tender value redeemable in Gibraltar for the value of 50 pence during 2018. This note is printed on genuine paper banknote material with watermark feature. Each note is individually printed with it’s unique serial number (both in red and black colours). Obviously this note is no longer valid for redeemable and is now a collectable item.

Whilst Gibraltar is a very small territory (2.6 sq m) it has an annual visitors of around 12 million people a year thus contributing significantly incomes to the local economy.

At the lower left corner, the note is also printed with the name Mincovna Kremnica. I believe this is the name of the imprinter. However I am unable to find out any information about this firm printing banknotes. Mincovna Kremnica is a state owned entity situated in Slovakia. It's main activities are minting of coins, medals and badges. In addition to minting coins for the Republic of Slovakia, it also provides services to 25 countries world wide. This entity was first established in 1328. This note is measured as 132mm x 77mm. The original note (P14b) was printed by Waterlow & Sons Limited (UK). This company was first founded in 1810 and dissolved in 2009.

Before the decimalisation of the British pound in 1971, one pound is divided into 20 shillings and each shilling into 12 pence, thus making 240 pence equal 1 pound. Therefore this 10 shillings note is worth 50 pence in today's currency conversion.

Given the purpose of this note, solely for promoting tourism in Gibraltar, in my opinion, this note should also be considered as a commemorative note and as such I have also posted this to my Commemorative site as well. This note cannot be considered as fantasy note as it was issued by an official issuing authority and was once legal tender too.
