This is a commemorative note of 50 hryven, released on 23.02.2024 on the eve of the second anniversary of the Russian invasion. Russia invaded Ukraine on 24.02.2022. This is the second commemorative note issued commemorating the war against Russia. On 24.02.2023, a banknote of 20 hryven was issued to remember the first anniversary of the unwanted war with Russia.

The theme for this commemorative note is 'Unity saves the world'. This is a numismatic product with 300,000 pieces printed and sold together in a simple card folder. The serial numbers range for this series are from EC 0000001 to 0300000. As this is a non-circulating banknote and sold at a premium, it is very unlikely you will find them in circulation. Україна

Національний банк України

Currency - Hryven (UAH)

This is a banknote of 20 hryven issued to remember the first anniversary of the unwanted war with Russia. The original official date for release was supposed to be on 23.02.2023, but it was then rescheduled to 24.03.2023. However, it was also reported that small quantity of these notes were sold by the central bank in early March as well.

The Russian's invasion started on 24.02.2022, when the Russian troops entered Ukraine from the north via Belarus, and from the east of Ukraine. By March 2022, when the war was in full scale, Ukraine lost about 27% of its territory to the Russians, and as the war went on, and with western powers increasing support and continuing supplying of weapons to the Ukrainians in the war, it has now managed to reclaim more than 51% of the land lost. One year on, the war is still ongoing, and there is no clear sign when this conflict is going to end.

This new 20 hryven banknote is issued to remember this unwanted and unfortunate conflict, and the theme is - "WE WILL NOT FORGET; WE WILL NOT FORGIVE!". Whilst the official statement made by the Central Bank that this is a commemorative banknote note, the celebration is mainly on the fortitude, resilience, indomitability and heroism of the Ukrainian people in defending its territory against a foreign super power.

A total of 300,000 pieces have been issued, of which 200,000 are sold as souvenir package, and 99,000 sets are sold in a special envelope. The serial numbers printed are ranging from 3C 0000001 to 0300000. This note is legal tender in Ukraine. This note is printed on paper material. The quantity issued also include two uncut sheets of 24.

I have been informed that the follows are the official issue prices: -

169 hryven in envelope each; and
195 hryven in card folder each

In my opinion, I personally would not call this a commemorative banknote but more of a celebration in making a statement for Ukrainians' defiance as there is noting to commemorative about as the conflict is still ongoing, and the pains and suffering are still imposing onto those innocent people, not just the Ukrainians but also to many of those ordinary Russians who are against this conflict too. No one wins in an arms conflict. Please note that I am not providing any support to any side. This is just my personal opinion, as a collector, I do welcome any banknote issues, regardless of its purpose. One can only hope that both sides can come to an amicable agreement soon to avoid further lost of innocent lives.

Three Ukrainian soldiers hoisting a Ukrainian state flag

Front - Three Ukrainian soldiers hoisting a Ukrainian state flag against the backdrop of fragments of a western map of Ukraine, and triangle shape flags of the countries that support Ukraine in the war - the United Kingdom, the European Union, the United States of America and Canada. The image of the Ukrainian flag hoisting was a photo taken by Oleksandr Smirnov titled "Ukraine soldiers are hoisting a flag". Above the note are printed with the following texts both in Ukrainian and English; -

In Ukrainian
"24 лютого 2022 року повномасштабним вторгненням російської армії розпочався новий етап збройної агресії проти України. Народна війна за незалежність і суверенітет України триває з 2014 року. Це також війна за цивілізаційний вибір: Україна відстоює свою приналежність до європейської цивілізації і водночас – ті засадничі цінності, права і свободи, що лежать в основі західного світу"

 In English
"On 24 February, a new stage of armed aggression against Ukraine began with a full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian army. The people’s war for the independence and sovereignty of Ukraine has been going on since 2014. This is also a war for a civilisational choice: Ukraine is defending its place in European civilisation, and at the same time fighting for the fundamental values, rights and freedoms that underpin the Western world".

Between the texts is a laurel wreath. Under the laurel wreath are the legend І НА ОНОВЛЕНІЙ ЗЕМЛІ ВРАГА НЕ БУДЕ... (And on the renovated land, there’ll be no enemy...)

Governor - Andriy Pyshnyy (Pyshnyi) since 07.10.2022
Watermark - Coat of Arms of Ukraine
Dimensions - 80mm x 165mm

Back - It features the legend “ПАМЯТАЄМО! НЕ ПРОБАЧИМО! НІКОЛИ!” (We will not forget! We will not forgive! Never!) (under the crown of thorns), while also depicting a kind of illusion – stylized poppies that stand for bloody bullet wounds. Below that is an image of two hands tried together with tape.

Below is the complete set of six notes first released in 2021 by the central bank for the celebration of the country's 30th year of independence from the Soviet Union 1991-2021.

The internal disintegration within the Soviet Empire first started in 1988 and then went on until 1991. On 24.08.1991, Ukraine declared its independence from the Soviet Union. The Act of Independence was adopted after the coup attempts in the Soviet Union on 19.08.1991 by the Communist hardliner leaders, who tried to siege power to retain central control over the USSR.

As this issue comprises of six notes, these notes were issued in three stages, all in 2021; -

20.08.2021 - 100 and 500 hryvnia;
19.11.2021 - 20 and 200 hryvnia; and
22.12.2021 - 50 and 1000 hryvnia.

The designs for this series are the same as the current issues but with added features to commemorate the celebration. All notes are printed with the Independence logo on the watermark area on the front of the notes:
30 pоків
незалежності
Украни
(30 Years Independence of Ukraine)

All banknotes are dated 2021 on the back, and according to the central bank, only 30,000 sets are issued for this commemorative series. Ukraine has a population of just over 44 million people and for 30,000 pieces per note is not considered a lot. No doubt that there may not be many banknote collectors in the country, however, many mums and dads may want to keep a set or two for future generations.

Signature;
Chairman - Kyrylo Shevchenko (since 16.07.2020)
Quantity - 30,000 pieces each

Whilst the total issue for these were limited to 30,000 pieces each, according to the central bank website, on 17.01.2022, 3,000 sets were released with matching serial numbers in an envelope, and another 2,000 sets were released with matching numbers in a folder. Obviously, these envelopes and folder sets are all sold with a premium on top of the face values. The remaining 25,000 notes are loose notes.

.Ukraine - Leonid Kostyantynovych Kadenyuk Souvenir Note - Not Legal Tender Note

Україна
(Ukraine)

Національний банк України
(National Bank of Ukraine)
Currency - Hriven (UAH)

This is an official souvenir banknote issued by the National Bank of Ukraine on 26.11.2020. The theme for this note is "Leonid Kadenyuk - the first astronaut of independent Ukraine".

This note celebrates Leonid Kostyantynovych Kadenyuk as the first astronaut of independent Ukraine. Ukraine became independent on 24.08.1991 following the collapse of the Soviet empire. The fall of the Soviet empire also saw many nations, once part of the USSR, became independent nations too. In all, I believe there were 13 nations* in total, including Ukraine.

Leonid Kadenyuk was born in a village in Klishkivtsi, south-west of Ukraine on 28.01.1951. He graduated from the Aviation school in 1971 and became a test pilot for the Soviet Cosmonaut Corps. Following the breakup of the Soviet Union, he retained his Ukraine citizenship. In 1995 he was selected as one of the group of astronauts by the Ukraine National Space Agency and then went on and trained by NASA as a payload specialist on the USA spacecraft Columbia. On 19.11.1997, he flew into space on the Space Shuttle Columbia and thus became the first Ukrainian citizen to fly into space. He died on 31.01.2018, aged 67.

The Space Shuttle Columbia was the first space shuttle that flew into space on 12.04.1981. I remembered that this mission was televised live on television around the world. Unfortunately, the Columbia space shuttle came to an erupt end when it was destroyed on 01.02.2003 while attempting to re-entering the earth atmosphere after a 16-day scientific mission. The mission killed all 7 crew members on board at that time. During these 22 years in service, it made a total of 28 missions and had spent 300 days in space and orbited 4808 times around the earth.

This is the third time the National Bank of Ukraine issued a non legal tender note. Unlike the previous two souvenir banknotes, this note is printed in a vertical format. A total of 50,000 pieces were issued in single note as well as in a presentation folder too. I am unable to see if any value (denomination) is printed on this note. However, it appears that the note is printed with the denomination of 1 but not the currency. On the front, it is printed with the central bank's name in English (National Bank of Ukraine) and on the back is printed with the text - The First Astronaut of Ukraine.

It is not sure why the National Bank of Ukraine issued non legal tender notes. The only advantage I can think of is that such banknotes are not required to be backed by any precious assets such as gold. This is a very good way to raise cash without any liabilities.

Footnote 👴
I remembered that day in 1981 when Colombia took off and flew into space. The launch was televised live and I saw it on television then. The launch was a very proud moment for NASA that a spacecraft took off from earth and then came back and reused it again and again. I also remember in the final mission in 2003 as students from a secondary school not far from where I am living were also invited to participate in the scientific experience. One of their studies was to send spiders into space and see how they would behave. When the shuttle exploded and incinerated, I was then told by one of the students who participated in this experience that they later found the spider(s) intact and alive. How true is this, I cannot confirm but this is what I was told.

Footnote:
I wonder why the Central Bank issuing such non legal tender souvenir note? This must be the cheapest way to raise funds without any monetary or financial responsibility. Most Central Banks would issued commemorative legal tender banknotes at a premium to cover such liability. Every banknotes collected by a collector is considered as a free loan to the issuing bank. In this case, we can't even request for our money (at face value) back as this is just a piece of paper printed on with no purchasing power or value whatsoever. This is the second time the National Bank of Ukraine doing this. Few central banks around the world had done the same too. However even those hyper inflation notes issued by Zimbabwe have a much better collectable value that this. For example, just have a look at the ZWL$100 trillion note. This note is from worthless to a highly desirable among collectors.

'Souvenir banknote - one hundred karbovantsiv'

This first Ukrainian banknote was printed with three languages - Ukrainian, Polish and Yiddish. The new note is measured 80mm x 170mm. The Ukrainian Revolution was a conflict between different political and military forces in Ukraine. As mentioned earlier, this is a souvenir note and as such has no legal tender value. Apart from the word Україна (Ukraine) the central bank’s name Національний банк України is missing from the note. Furthermore there are no value printed on this note apart from the design of the 1917 100 karbovantsiv note. The note is also printed with the texts of the events of the Ukrainian Revolution 1917-1921 and 100 РОКІВ (YEARS) on both sides. The note has no signature either.
