...Gibraltar - £50 Reprint Dated 2019

 Government of Gibraltar
 (British Overseas Territory)

Gibraltar Minister of Finance Treasury Department
Currency: Pound (GIP)

With the passing of Queen Elizabeth the Second (b.1926-2022) on 08.09.2022, I believe that this £50 could be the last of the series bearing her image on banknotes of Gibraltar? It is not sure when this note was actually released, but it has the date of 30.05.2019 printed on the note. This is the first reprint of the 2010 series, first released on 08.07.2010. The design on this note is the same as the first issue, with the exceptions of the date and signature.

Fifty Pounds
Queen Elizabeth the Second (b.1926-2022)

Front - Queen Elizabeth the Second (b.1926-2022). This portrait was taken in 1977 during her Silver Jubilee, aged 51 years old. Whilst it is not showing on the portrait, the watermark is showing the Queen wearing the Grand Duchess Vladimir's tiara. This tiara was smuggled out of Russia during the Russian Revolution (1917-1923), and was then owned by the Queen until her passing in 2022.

Commission of Currency - Albert Anthony Mena (tenure 2014-2022)
Note dated - 30th May 2019
Prefix - A/AA
Watermark - Queen Elizabeth the Second, value of £50
Dimensions - 157mm x 84.5mm

Back - Casemates Square built in 1817. This square is located at the northern end of Gibraltar, and is the largest of the two squares in Gibraltar. The square was originally built as an army barracks. Today, the square is occupied by small retail businesses including pubs, bars and restaurants, and is a popular place for foreign visitors. This square is owned by the Government of Gibraltar, and I believe the square depicted on the note, is viewed from the south-east position.

..Gibraltar - 10 Pounds dated 01.08.2016 Reprint

 (British Overseas Territory)

Gibraltar Minister of Finance Treasury Department
Currency: Pound (GIP)

Queen Elizabeth the Second aka Lilibet
Born - 21.04.1926
Died - 08.09.2022
Queen of UK for 70 years, 7 months and 2 days since 06.02.1952 (25,782 days)
Monarch of Antigua & Barbuda, Australia, The Bahamas, Belize, Canada, Grenade, Jamaica, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, St Christopher & Nevis, St Vincent & The Grenadines, Solomon Islands, and Tuvalu.

This is a £10 reprint from the 2010 series. This new note is printed with the date of 01.08.2016. The design of this note is the same as those issued in 2010, but has the new signature of Albert Mena. Mena is a partner of a law firm called Hassans in Gibraltar, and he was seconded to the Gibraltar as the Financial Secretary for 3 years in early September 2014. His seconded ended in 2017, but his position was then extended until Gibraltar post Brexit position is settled. Hassans is the largest legal firm in Gibraltar.

This is the second Gibraltar banknote that has his signature printed on it. The previous note issued that has his signature on it was the £100 commemorative note issued in 2017, celebrating the centenary birth of Sir Joshua Hassan.

Gibraltar is an overseas territory of the United Kingdom, and is self-governing in all matters except defense. Gibraltar (aka the Rock), was ceded to the British as part of the settlement following the War of Spanish Succession of 1701-14. The British captured the Rock on 04.08.1704, and was ceded to the British on 11.04.1713 under the Treaty of Utrecht. Since then, Spain have been trying to reunite Gibraltar with the rest of Spain but without any success. This note is printed in predominately blue colour and is dated 01.08.2016.

Ten Pounds
Late Queen Elizabeth the Second (b.1926-2022)

Front - The portrait of Queen Elizabeth the Second. The portrait was taken by Peter Grugeon in 1977 when the Queen was 51 years old. Next to the portrait is printed with the name of the issuing authority - Government of Gibraltar, and below it is the Coat of Arms of Gibraltar.

Signature - Albert Anthony Mena (tenure 2014-2022)
Watermark - Image of Queen Elizabeth the Second and the value of £10
Dimensions - 143mm x 76mm

Back - The scene of The Great Siege 1779-1783. The Great Siege of Gibraltar was carried out by both Spain and France in the attempt to capture Gibraltar from the British during the War of the American Revolution. The siege was the 14th and last failed attempt to conquer Gibraltar by force, by means of a siege, and lasted for more than 3 years. The defence of Gibraltar was headed by General George Augustus (b.1717-1790), who was also the Governor of Gibraltar from 1777 to 1790. The note is depicting the General directing the defence of Gibraltar.

...Gibraltar - 5 Pounds 2020 New Series

  HM Government of Gibraltar
 (British Overseas Territory)

Gibraltar Minister of Finance Treasury Department
Currency: Pound (GIP)

This is a new series of £5 banknote reportedly released on 01.12.2021. The size of this new note is smaller than the previous £5 note. The reason for this is to follow the standards of those banknotes issued in Great Britain. With this new series, all previous £5 banknotes issued became non-legal tender on 31.01.2022.

The design of this new £5, on the front is very much the same as the one issued in 2011. On the back, it features a new design, showcasing a famous and popular man made landmark in Gibraltar.

Five Pounds
Queen Elizabeth the Second

Front - Portrait of Queen Elizabeth the Second. This is the same portrait used in the 2011 series. Unlike the previous series, the letters HM are added to the issuing authority - HM Government of Gibraltar.  This was first adopted when the £100 commemorative note was issued in 2017. This note is printed with the dated 21.08.2020.

The portrait on this note was taken in 1977 by Peter Grugeon, when the Queen was 51 years old. I wonder why the authorities did not use a more recent image of the Queen.

Back - The Windsor Suspension bridge. This bridge was opened to the public on 21.06.2016 by the Chief Minister Fabian Picardo. This is a pedestrian bridge and is about 70 meters long. The bridge offers a spectacular view across the bay.

The colour of this new note has also changed from light green to bluish colour. The first prefix for this series is B/AA.

Signature - Albert Anthony Mena, Financial Secretary (since September 2014)
Dimensions - 125mm x 65mm

Gibraltar - 10 Shillings 1934 Replica Promotional Note 2018

Gibraltar
The Government of Gibraltar

This is a very unique banknote. In 2018, the Government of Gibraltar issued a 10 shillings replica note with the same design of the 10 shillings note first issued in 1934. The purpose of this issue was to celebrate World Tourism in 2018 in Gibraltar. The design of this note is based on the one that was issued with the date of 01.06.1942 (P14b) with the signature of the Financial Secretary CD Todd. On the back, it added the following texts to the note:

HM GOVERNMENT OF GIBRALTAR
CELEBRATE WORLD TOURISM IN 2018
THIS BANKNOTE CAN BE REDEEMED IN GIBRALTAR IN THE YEAR 2018 FOR 50 PENCE

Whilst this is a replica banknote, it was issued as legal tender value redeemable in Gibraltar for the value of 50 pence during 2018. This note is printed on genuine paper banknote material with watermark feature. Each note is individually printed with it’s unique serial number (both in red and black colours). Obviously this note is no longer valid for redeemable and is now a collectable item.

Whilst Gibraltar is a very small territory (2.6 sq m) it has an annual visitors of around 12 million people a year thus contributing significantly incomes to the local economy.

At the lower left corner, the note is also printed with the name Mincovna Kremnica. I believe this is the name of the imprinter. However I am unable to find out any information about this firm printing banknotes. Mincovna Kremnica is a state owned entity situated in Slovakia. It's main activities are minting of coins, medals and badges. In addition to minting coins for the Republic of Slovakia, it also provides services to 25 countries world wide. This entity was first established in 1328. This note is measured as 132mm x 77mm. The original note (P14b) was printed by Waterlow & Sons Limited (UK). This company was first founded in 1810 and dissolved in 2009.

Before the decimalisation of the British pound in 1971, one pound is divided into 20 shillings and each shilling into 12 pence, thus making 240 pence equal 1 pound. Therefore this 10 shillings note is worth 50 pence in today's currency conversion.

Given the purpose of this note, solely for promoting tourism in Gibraltar, in my opinion, this note should also be considered as a commemorative note and as such I have also posted this to my Commemorative site as well. This note cannot be considered as fantasy note as it was issued by an official issuing authority and was once legal tender too.

Gibraltar - £100 Polymer Commemorative 2015 (2017)

The release of this note was first announced by the Chief Minister Fabian Picardo of Gibraltar on 18.08.2015. This commemorative note, dated 21.08.2015, honoured the centenary of the birth of Sir Joshua Hassan aka Salvador (Saviour) (b.21.8.1915-1.7.1997). Salvador was known as the Father of Modern Modern Gibraltar and was the first and third Chief Minister of Gibraltar for 22 years. He was also accredited as being the most important architect of Gibraltar's more towards self-determination. This commemorative is printed on polymer material with a portrait of the Queen printed on one side and the image of Sir Joshua on the other. This note was released on 23.01.2017. Gibraltar is now the first in Europe and among few other nations to have issued currencies in Paper material, Hybrid and now Polymer. Other countries that have done this are Fiji, Solomon Islands, Samoa and Papua New Guinea. However only Gibraltar and Papua New Guinea have issued them with same denominations ie £100 and 100 Kina respectively.

It is reported that 250,000 pieces printed. However, it was also reported that those notes printed with serial number above C250000 are replacement.

Albert Mena (signature on the note) is the current Financial Secretary and Commissioner of Currency of Gibraltar.
